Canadians bullish on Phoenix real estate
Jason Warick wrote a story in the June 26 edition of the Saskatoon Star Phoenix titled, ”Sask. residents find Arizona opportunity.”
“The strong Canadian dollar, combined with rock-bottom prices for real estate in many cities such as Phoenix, means Canadians can snap up vacation homes or investment properties for less than half of the price of just one year ago. That’s attracted Saskatchewan buyers in droves.”

I still think baby boomers should be cashing out of their suddenly valuable Saskatoon homes, whether to buy into Phoenix/Florida on the cheap, or to get into the Okanagan now that we’ve closed (some) of the gap, it seems there is no better time to buy a retirement home in warmer climates than now.
Elderly people in Saskatoon, housebound for half the year, always seemed to be stuck here for financial reasons in the past. I wonder how much less common hip fractures are in Phoenix (I like Sedona more!) than Saskatoon during the winter??

Norm, every elderly person I know is horrified of falling and breaking a hip. Really high mortality and pretty darn debilitating for elderly people. I once again have to agree with Jim on this one. Saskatoon is a nice place to be young, but come winter, a miserable place to be old. There are a lot of Saskatoonians who retire to Abbotsford BC, back when they used to be more expensive.

My grandmother broke her hip and was never the same. My step-father did as well but thankfully he recovered. Both did it indoors, by the way. I agree that a hip fracture is a serious concern for the elderly. It’s one of the more humourous moments for the “unbuzz” campaign, and frankly, I took it as a joke.

I think the fractured hip comment is legit. Just speaks in general to our icy, frigid winters being a big obstacle to independence of elderly people. It’s no coincidence that retirement hot spots are warmer than here, with beautiful views and nature that people can enjoy more than April to October a bonus who can afford it!!

Hey I agree with Jim on something!
Sedona is awesome! My brother has a nice townhouse there and we visit occasionally, such a nice town. They have this unique bylaw restricting the
signage to certain specs, ie. no golden arches. Very refreshing. And the red rocks and calm atmosphere are downright intoxicating.
Phoenix on the other hand, wouldn’t live there.
I think you’ll find that real estate prices reflect my sentiments. Some very high-end stuff there…

It’s true! There are some incredible deals in Phoenix and Scottsdale. The housing bubble burst at the same time that the Canadian dollar became par to the US dollar. It’s the perfect storm for Canucks. I am originally from Edmonton, but have lived in Phoenix for a decade. I’ve never seen so many Canadians before. My business is now 75% Canadians. They are scooping up beautiful new homes on the outskirts of town for $125,000-150,000. I think even more Canadians will be buying this winter.
